Language signals

Dr. Helen notes an interesting point made by the author of a newly published book:
Only in America does the word “frontier” mean freedom, open space and opportunity. In every other language, the word “frontier” means the opposite– border, boundary, and fear of the dangers that lurk in in the strange and the new.
That's not insignificant, but potentially more significant is the fact that America is also one of the very few societies foolish enough to forget that the primary difference between "immigrant" and "invader" is one of quantity.  One of the reasons that the historical Greek, Roman, Chinese, and Japanese cultures remained distinct and significant for so long is that their words for foreigner translate to "barbarian", "barbarian", "barbarian", and "round-eyed, red-haired, butter-stinking devil".

My grandfather had the good fortune to get a diary from a Japanese man he knifed during WWII. Later translated, it was a joy to read. On the Nip's more polite days he referred to Westerners as "awful bearded troll men."

Don't be ridiculous now, that's BLOND-haired.

No, Vox has it correct.

The Chinese characters for ang mo are the same as those in the historical Japanese term Kōmō (紅毛), which was used during the Edo period (1603–1868) as an epithet for (northwestern European) white people. It primarily referred to Dutch traders who were the only Europeans allowed to trade with Japan during Sakoku, its 200-year period of isolation.

Americans will learn.

Given China and Japan's histories, Germany or modern Russia might as well be models for emulation in this regard as well.

Steve Sailer just made a post highlighting a reader comment on which countries are most resistant to immigration, and Japan topped the list.

I fully support Japanese discrimination against foreigners who aren't me. Based on personal experience, the vast majority are drunken, lazy slobs who treat their time here as a sort of extended adolescence. Those (like yours truly, of course!) who actually take the time to learn the language and culture and fit in are a tiny minority.

Of course, I'll never be truly Japanese - nor do I want to be. As the selfish, individualistic American I am, I staunchly refuse to become a soulless, workaholic automaton who gets off on being miserable. While certainly not all Japanese are like this, it's the predominant mindset.

Quantity, but also willingness to assimilate. The current flood of illegals shows little inclination to do so...and what inclination there is winds up promptly squashed.

Quantity, but also willingness to assimilate.

One thing, and one thing only determines the assimilability of immigrants: comparative attractiveness of their women. If similar to the host's population, they'll peacefully intermarry.

Blacks have been here since Jamestwon, and still have not assimilated.

Unfortmately, America is not getting its immigrants form Italy, Estonia, France and Germany.

The Chinese thought the Westerners smelled bad and had no rituals of significance. They were obviously inferior, and would never assimilate, as they did not perform the rituals.

Of course, China was objectively the highest form of civilization up to the mid 1700's, but then they stopped.

By being multicultural, leftists demean every culture equally. One can only respect another culture if one also respects their own.

Good fences make good neighbors.

From what I've heard, up until the 1950s blacks largely were assimilated. But then they somehow managed to literally unassimilate and, I think as Vox once said, create an independent culture practically ex nihilo.

Anonymous Van November 22, 2012 8:38 PM

Blacks were never truly assimilated. They simply had Western civilization forced on them through external pressure. Once said pressure was removed, blacks were free to be black. Sort of like removing the molds before the plaster has dried, and watching the wet plaster quickly return to a shapeless, unstructured, useless blob.

Actually 外人 gaijin (roughly ''foreigner'') is not quite as you describe it, but yeah, it's often a derisive term.

My stereoscopic view is so fish-eyed when I glance out at this cold, unfeeling, lemon chiffon shaded yellow world. I lack the epicanthal eye folds of the superior Asian masters.

On the other hand, having a epicanthal fold mimics the facial effects of Down's Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, and Phenylketonuria. So there's that bright side there.

Anonymous Idle Aztec November 22, 2012 10:12 PM

Here's a fun little party trick. You can tell someone has Aztec ancestry by just looking at the eyes. In traditional Asians, the epicanthal flaps will mold into the inside corners of the eyes, on either side of the nose. In Aztecs, the flaps start on the upper edge below the eyebrows, traveling to the outside corners of the eyes.

Avoid using this at ACLU get-togethers, Breaking Bad theme parties, and Mexican drug cartel meetings.

A healthy reaction to barbarian invasion

Anonymous Grinder November 22, 2012 10:44 PM

American Indian experience gives a good hint of what is to come. Other races will continue to come, develop their own parallel power structures and start to take over. Once the tipping point has been reached, further expansion and consolidation of the new owners at the expense of the former owners will be justified and rationalized no matter how obviously hypocritical and contrary to the stated beliefs of the new owners like "peace, justice, equality, fairness etc."
Other races immigrating into your nation is good for the country? How well did it work out for the American Indians?

Judging by his column today, looks like Derbyshire read a few of this ol' Idler's comments.

Maybe it is coincidence. Or maybe it is because I compared his enormous balls to pillows and adroit weaponized yo-yos.

More like the 1920's. Read up on the Harlem Renaissance for example.

I could have sworn Vox said later than that, but I could be misremembering. Either way, I get the impression that blacks were assimilating and Then Something Happened.

Anonymous Kyle In Japan November 23, 2012 2:54 AM

I don't think 外人 was the specific word for foreigner that Vox was referring to. There was an earlier one referring to red-haired barbarians, if memory serves.

The beginnings of this, shall we call it "celebration of diversity", where blacks were beginning to embrace their African heritage and combine it with their western lives definitely began and really took hold during the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920's. Now, all of this came significantly slowed down if it didn't out right stop altogether during the depression of course, as pretty much everyone was too busy surviving to worry about art and other cultural pursuits. After WWII, in the '50s it all started up again.

Anonymous Michael Maier November 23, 2012 10:39 AM

SB: I think celebrating their lineage would have been just fine. It wasn't until you combined that with "here's free money" in LBJ's "Great Society" and then adding "civil rights" that blacks started failing in large numbers.

You tell someone "you can't make it in life without government help, here's a check for doing nothing, oh and BTW get a lawyer and sue if someone offends you" and what else should you expect?

Blogger WarriorClass November 23, 2012 2:52 PM

Half the people in the United States are here due to the Immigration Reform Act of 1965. They come from second and third world dictatorships to the great Walmart that is the USA, to get all the goodies they made in their home countries, and Statist & Socialist Europe. To call these people Americans completely bastardizes the term. America has been invaded and the culture has been destroyed as a result.
