Seau suicide

Former pro football great and Oceanside sports legend Junior Seau has committed suicide, found at his beachfront home with a gunshot wound to the chest, according to multiple sources.
WTH? That's the sum total of my reaction, except to note that the man could play the game.

One of the best. This is sad news...

I can't ever see myself doing something like that. I can honestly say that never once in my life have I thought of killing myself, except as an abstract exercise.

That being said, I can understand how some people become unable to switch perspectives and get locked into hopelessness, especially if all you have are the hopes this world offers. If I didn't know Christ I'm sure I'd be closer to the edge than I am.

It takes a lot of balls to shoot yourself in the chest, if you have any comprehension of physiology, and I'm sure a footballer must.

Anonymous ENthePeasant May 02, 2012 3:56 PM

OK, not to shiite in everyone's death glow, but men who shoot themselves in the chest do it out of vanity. As for being a great player, not until late in his career. He had this ugly habit of disregarding the called defense and running around like a blazing fast chicken with his dick cut off. RBs and TE's got a lot of long first downs against the Chargers because he was constantly out of position particularly on third down. I'll just call him a great athlete and send prayers to his family.

Or a lot of vanity - don't want to mess up that pretty face, do we?

Damn. Beaten to the nut-punch.

Interesting moniker Kerry considering the topic of athlete suicide. Nothing like the good old days of Texas wrestling with Gino & Chris super-kicking the Von Erich boys.

"Or a lot of vanity - don't want to mess up that pretty face, do we?"

It may not be vanity. Some have speculated that it was done (as other athletes have done and more will do) to preserve their brains for post-concussion syndrome.

Another weird factoid . . . this is the 8th death from the 1994 SB roster, and the 4th defensive starter.

RIP Junior.

Sorry . . . should have said "post-concussion syndrome *research*"

"Chicken"? Playing with the Chargers? How apt.

Gee, that roster may be likened to the folks who found King Tut.

Yet one more man "who had everything" offing himself. What a waste and heaping baggage on children that they'll carry their entire lives.

He was a great player.

Anonymous raggededge May 02, 2012 5:19 PM

Of course, it's immediately ruled a suicide...

Aren't women the ones that will shoot themselves in the chest instead of the head due to vanity? I didn't know that was a male phenomenon as well.

Anonymous Josh May 02, 2012 5:51 PM

he didn't shoot himself in the head because he wanted his brain to be studied for cte and other brain injuries

Anonymous raggededge May 02, 2012 5:54 PM

Or maybe he was gay.

-----You know if you wait another 50 years they all will be dead and that would be amazing.
Anyone know how to quote on this new layout. I know I'm way behind, but I've been out of the country for months.

Anonymous Supernaut May 02, 2012 6:22 PM

RIP Junior.

I've read the articles and watched the newsbreaks on NFL Network.

Everyone's talking about depression from no longer playing the game. Not finding another purpose in life to derive meaning, the long term effects of concussions, etc.

I found one factoid that stuck out like a sore thumb in all this, and it seems that no one else has made note of:

He is survived by his EX-WIFE Gina Seau, and their 3 children.

Think having a broken family might have something to do with Junior deciding to exit this mortal coil a bit early?

Nah. Couldn't be.

Anonymous IanB May 02, 2012 7:14 PM

Agree with Supernaut, for all its normalcy in our culture divorce is a psychologically destructive force that no culture can evolve to handle well.

This will be blamed on CTE and the violence of football when they inevitably find serious damage in his brain but the greater impact could easily have been his separation from the mother of his children. The loss of football and mental control would only help remove barriers to this kind of behavior.

That said, the game probably needs to continue to take a closer look at whether the costs of football are worth it. Particularly for those who are not compensated for it.

castricv: Blogger comments don't support anything like real quoting. People have been using the HTML italics tags as a substitute. You have to type them manually.

I cannot fathom why Blogger/Google forbids the use of blockquote and pre tags.

I would give odds that she had dragged him back into court for more child support or back child support. It sounds like several of his businesses had failed in the past couple of years. He might have thought this was his only out, sadly, he may be right.

He was a good ball player.

> Think having a broken family might have something to do with Junior deciding to exit this mortal coil a bit early?

Equally likely that the CTE had something to do with his having a broken family.

Wow, I guess I could never know the personal struggles a man is going through, but that would seem a little drastic for a man in his position. Maybe he figured his own was the only ass he had yet to kick in this life...

I always find it odd when a man shoots himself in the chest rather than the head. Did he want to look pretty in the casket??

Blogger Markku May 03, 2012 8:04 AM

There have been a couple of cases of failed suicide attempts in my town. One tied dynamite under his chin and set it off. Didn't die, but lost his entire chin bone. One had last second regrets - enough time to move the pistol a bit but not enough to tell his finger to stop pulling.

I think the worst case scenarios in aiming for the chest aren't quite as bad.

Blogger Markku May 03, 2012 8:31 AM

Also, not a suicide attempt per se, but another disgruntled businessman also tried to bomb the tax bureau with dynamite in this town. Just ended up disfiguring himself. Apparently dynamite isn't as easy to handle as in video games.

If he was indeed suffering from CTE - that is, from cognitive impairment, chronic depression, and anger- and impulse-control problems caused by repeated blows to the head - he would not be the first to commit suicide in a way intended to preserve his brain for the autopsy.

Mentally ill people do irrational things. That's why it's called mental illness.

Anonymous Conrad The Crazed May 03, 2012 10:13 AM

Wasn't he found by his girlfriend? Why is no one asking the obvious? Did the girlfriend off him like Steve McNair's girl did? Supposedly he was charged for assaulting a girlfriend not too long ago (unsure if it was this one or not).

You could tell in his last two seasons with the Pantyriots that he knew the end of his run was upon him, and the ache to play the game remained as ardent as ever.

You could play and more importantly, raise the level of play of those around you. RIP from Ravens nation, where we friggin' love domination by defensive power.

I will always carry fond memories of Seau terrorizing Elway for a good number of seasons. Good times.

Blogger Patrick Kelly May 03, 2012 10:34 AM

As a Raiders fan I should have hated him, but from the first time I saw Mr. Seau perform on the field, I was both amazed and terrified that my team would have to face him at least twice a season for many years.

I am both sad and angry. How can someone who has achieved and experienced so much in life do this? I know, he's not the first, but it always gets me riled up a bit when I hear about it.

My hope is that it was due to some kind of anguishing mental illness or injury, otherwise it is evil cowardice.

Lord have mercy.

It could be possible he shot himself in the chest so that his brain would be intact for study.

Whoops, someone beat me to it. I also just googled the hunch and Boston University is requesting his brain for study.

Anonymous cherub's revenge May 03, 2012 11:02 AM

Boston researchers request Junior Seau’s brain

The death of Seau, who killed himself with a gunshot to the chest, has reminded many of the death of former NFL player Dave Duerson, who also killed himself with a gunshot to the chest and who left a note asking for his brain to be examined to see whether the depression that plagued him late in life could be linked to brain damage he suffered on the football field. The Boston researchers determined that Duerson did, in fact, show signs of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, a progressive degenerative disease of the brain found in people with a history of repetitive brain trauma.

Anonymous E. PERLINE May 03, 2012 12:13 PM

Was Seau Polynesian? It would explain his physical strength. In any case his suicide wan't necessarily CET. Any type can get depressed.

I watch youngsters doing hare-brained stunts on video, and injuring their bodies, and I think the commentators make it sound funny, but the effects are long-lasting. If I knew the consequences of bruising when I was young I wouldn't have risked a bruise.

Anonymous DanSomers May 03, 2012 3:22 PM

no doubt this will be used by those who want to get rid of the defensive part of the game. I would not be surprised at all to see a form of tag football in the future.... as a former player [not pro] we all understood the risk of injury and accepted that...my knee was blown out twice in college but it is a part of the game; and unfortunately, concussions and the damage they cause are part of it as well..unless you get rid of tackling completely that will not change. I think anyone who plays the game needs to understand how dangerous it is and take responsibility for their decision to play and not blame others for any injuries sustained. I would like to see hard hits and tackling remain in the game..football is not football without it... that said I have a very hard time watching pro ball these days-- I hate the gang/ghetto mentality and the prancing around.. for me that's a much bigger turn off than anything else... drives me crazy....but that must be bc I'm brain damaged from playing football.
